George Hook, Patron of the Comber Foundation:

Having accompanied volunteers from Comber to Romania, I have witnessed the tireless work they do in trying to close down state run institutions in Giurgiu County. This requires help from you at perhaps the most difficult economic times. Please find a little time in your heart for young adults that perhaps unknowingly will owe you a debt of gratitude for the rest of their lives.”

 Providing residential homes

We believe large scale institutions for people with disabilities are unacceptable and violate their human rights. We provide community based homes for those still living in institutional care.

Since 2006 Comber has invested in buying permanent homes for residents of adult institutions in Giurgiu County. In partnership with Giurgiu County Council and Social Services Department, 38 individuals to date have moved from long-term institutional care to these group homes to begin new lives in a community based setting. All our homes opened to date are staffed by the Social Services Department of Giurgiu, so the ongoing running costs are sustained locally. Giurgiu County Council are committed to closing their remaining adult institutions over the coming years, and working with Comber and other partners to provide alternative community based care.

To date, Comber has opened homes in Giurgiu City:

  • Casa Phare - opened in 2006
  • Casa Comber - opened in 2007
  • 4 Apartments in Giurgiu city - opened in 2009

More homes were opened and will be opening shortly in more rural locations within the county.

  • Gradinari village (2 adjoining houses) - opened in 2011
  • Izvoarele village (a house and 2 renovated apartments)

A home is also under construction at Valea Bujorului, being built by our partners Romanian Appeal Helpline and Portadown Parish volunteers, on land donated by Izvoarele Local Council.
