George Hook, Patron of the Comber Foundation:

Having accompanied volunteers from Comber to Romania, I have witnessed the tireless work they do in trying to close down state run institutions in Giurgiu County. This requires help from you at perhaps the most difficult economic times. Please find a little time in your heart for young adults that perhaps unknowingly will owe you a debt of gratitude for the rest of their lives.”

Supporting families

We believe no child belongs in an institution. We are supporting families who have children with special needs to care for them at home.

Parent's Association - ASCHF

ASCHF is a voluntary association of families with children with disabilities in Giurgiu County. The group has around 70 members. Our professional volunteer programme supports the parents group by providing therapy input for the children and education sessions for the parents, many of whom have very limited access to this kind of help. We have also provided funding for their annual Tabara camp and equipment.

Early Intervention

Comber is a partner from 2009-2011 in PREVI Early Intervention Project, funded under EU Daphne III, with KOS (Belgium), Samaritans (Bulgaria) and Iminal de Copil (Romania), which is helping to establish early intervention centres in Romania and Bulgaria. The purpose of the project is to help families who have children with disabilities to keep them at home and prevent institutionalisation in later life. Comber has provided Irish trainers who have travelled to Bulgaria and Romania to work with local staff, as well as hosting an exchange visit to Ireland.
